Night Photography Engagement Session | Rekha Rajneel In Downtown Los Angeles | By Aaroneye Photography

Night photography is one of the most difficult types of photography, being a real challenge for many people. You can’t just use the flash because it will kill the ambient light, while low shutter speed will add unwanted blur to the photos. Nor can you set the film speed, respectively the ISO at a very high setting because such an action will cause grain in the photograph. The key of performing high quality night photography is to learn how to balance all mentioned aspects in order to get an outstanding picture.

One of the key elements of night photography is ambient lighting, and you certainly want to get the most of it. On-camera flash may flatten the shadows and remove that certain touch only ambient can give to a picture. The goal here is to let as much natural light in as possible, so you might want to set the aperture of your camera as high as possible, preferably over 1.8, so that the lens will be largely open.
You should definitely lower the shutter speed and preferably get a tripod. The last thing you want is your camera to shake and create a blurry image. Optimal shutter speeds for shooting in low light without a flash are between one fifth and 1/30. This step is absolutely crucial because your shutter speed must be low enough in order to properly receive light.

It’s also recommended to use a high film speed, otherwise known as ISO. This is very important because film speed basically controls the film’s sensitivity to light. The higher the film speed, the more intense the light on the film. On regular daylight, photographers use a film speed of 100-400. However, when it comes to night photography, you might want to go up to 800, or even higher if you wish(depend on your camera). But keep in mind that the more you increase the film speed, the grainier your picture will get. After you reach around 1600 you will start seeing the grain or otherwise said, pixelation effect. Fortunately, the graining effect can be reduced in programs such as Photoshop.
